Trump won’t testify as defence and prosecution rest cases
Former President Donald Trump will not testify in his impeachment trial after both the defence and prosecution rested their cases. Trump’s lawyers argued that the trial was unconstitutional and that he did not incite the violence at the Capitol on January 6th.
The prosecution presented evidence showing Trump’s rhetoric leading up to the riot, including his repeated claims of election fraud and calls for his supporters to “fight” at the Capitol. However, Trump’s defence team argued that his speech was protected under the First Amendment and that he did not directly call for violence.
The Senate will now vote on whether to convict Trump of incitement of insurrection. A two-thirds majority is required for conviction, meaning that at least 17 Republican senators would need to vote against Trump.
While Trump has decided not to testify, his supporters have continued to argue that the impeachment trial is a politically motivated witch hunt and that he should not be held responsible for the actions of a small group of violent individuals.
